Procedures
- Sleeve Gastrectomy
The “sleeve gastrectomy” is a laparoscopic procedure during which approximately 75% of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow “sleeve”-shaped tube. The smaller stomach limits food intake and reduces the production of ghrelin (hunger hormone), contributing to long-term weight loss.
Who Is the Surgery For?
The procedure is primarily intended for individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 40 kg/m², or ≥ 35 kg/m² when associated with comorbid conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, or hypertension, and when conservative treatments (diet, exercise, medication) have failed. In specialized centers, it may also be considered for BMI 30–35 with uncontrolled metabolic disease.
It is not recommended for individuals with severe gastroesophageal reflux, active ulcers, unmanaged psychiatric conditions, or poor long-term follow-up compliance. A complete clinical and psychological assessment is always required before surgery.
- ✅ BMI ≥ 40 kg/m² without other diseases when conservative methods have failed
- ✅ BMI ≥ 35 kg/m² with significant comorbidities (e.g., type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, hypertension, fatty liver disease)
- ✅ BMI 30–35 kg/m² in special cases with uncontrolled metabolic disease or high cardiovascular risk, provided the center has relevant expertise
