AGIOS NIKOLAOS CENTRAL CLINIC
Outpatient Clinics / Surgical Department
The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Surgery Department of “Agios Nikolaos Central Clinic” specializes in the surgical treatment of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, applying minimally invasive techniques (laparoscopic or robotic total colectomy with ileal-pouch anal anastomosis, segmental enterectomies, fistula/abscess repair) when medication fails or complications arise. Our multidisciplinary team ensures thorough preoperative evaluation, targeted postoperative follow-up, and personalized care to achieve the best possible quality of life for patients.
AGIOS NIKOLAOS CENTRAL CLINIC
Surgery for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Procedures
- Ulcerative Colitis (UC): The only definitive solution is total colectomy with ileoanal anastomosis, which involves complete removal of the colon. After the surgery, frequent, chronic diarrhea is common.
- Crohn’s Disease (CD): Depending on the issue, segmental bowel resections are performed for strictures or perforations. Fistulas, abscesses, fissures, or hemorrhages are repaired, and where needed, abscesses are drained and treated.
Who Is the Surgery For?
Surgical treatment is recommended for patients who do not respond to medical therapy or develop complications — conditions that can only be resolved surgically.
- For patients with ulcerative colitis who do not respond adequately to treatment or experience serious complications (e.g., toxic megacolon, severe bleeding), total colectomy with ileoanal anastomosis may be indicated.
- For patients with Crohn’s disease who present with strictures, perforations, fistulas, abscesses, or other complications unresponsive to conservative treatment, segmental resections or targeted surgeries (e.g., fistula repair) may be necessary.
